It is possible for a USB storage device to become logically disconnected: the device is still plugged in, but is invisible from the operating system (e.g. It's not listed under /proc/bus/usb).Maybe this can happen to other kinds of USB or other removable devices as well.
Christiaan van den Berg May 16, 2012 Hi all. I have the same problem on MY MY 11 Disco 4 (SA). An iPod plays fine through the normal iPod Jack under the armrest, but the car refuses to recognise my iPhone. Recently I found a KPN USB adapter in a box I had forgotten about, since it looked pretty cool I was wondering if I could hook it up to my Windows 7 (64 bit) machine.
Since i don't have a CD-rom or DVD-drive in PC and most drivers that come supplied with hardware are out of date, I tried downloading the drivers from the suppliers (KPN) website, unfortunately they have no Windows 7 drivers available
I also tried the manufacturer: Siemens, apparently they forgot they ever made such a device, however the drivers are still on the website, if you know where to look.
The direct link is to the complete package is:
http://www.gigaset.com/fileadmin/legacy-assets/usb_adapter_108_V2025_eng.exe
If they take down the link for some reason, here is a mirror:
complete packadge / drivers only
Both packaged include drivers for Windows 98, ME, XP, 2000 and Vista (and the Vista drivers work without problems on Windows 7)
I would recommend downloading the drivers only, since the software included in the complete packadge does not work in Windows 7:
Extract the files from Siemens Gigaset USB Adapter 108 driver only.zip somewhere.
Plug in your USB device, it will look for drivers but can't find any:
Go to the Device Manager and look for AR5523:
Double click to open it:
Click 'Update driver....' then select the second option: 'Browse my computer for driver software'
Select the folder where you extracted the files and hit next:
Let it install the drivers:
Success:
Now you can connect to a Wifi network using the regular Windows 7 menu next to the clock:
I also tried using these drivers on Windows 2012 server (the server version of Windows 8) without problems.
So this method should also work on Windows 8.
Also, the driver is suited for the 'Siemens Gigaset USB Adapter 54' 'Gigaset USB Adapter 108' that are identified by: USBVID_129B&PID_160D and USBVID_129B&PID_160C
